Michael Hu is a 19-year old award-winning saxophonist, multi-instrumentalist, and composer based in Ann Arbor, Michigan. He has appeared at Baker’s Keyboard Lounge, Cliff Bell’s, Bert’s, the Michigan Jazz Festival, the Detroit Jazz Festival, toured in Europe with German bass player Dieter Ilg, and has played with notable musicians such as Ellen Rowe, Marion Hayden, Sean Dobbins, Vincent Chandler, Adam Larson, and many others.
Michael began playing the saxophone at the age of 12 and soon acquired an interest in jazz. In high school, he picked up flute, clarinet, bassoon, and began to find his way into the Detroit music scene where much of his musical growth took place.
Michael is a part of the leaderless trio Human Kind with other members Joshua Catania and Travis Swanson. The group incorporates contemporary improvisation, jazz, folk, and many other styles to create a new sound in a unique instrumentation of saxophone/bass clarinet, piano, and guitar.
Hu also leads two different quintets, a quartet, and is a frequent sideman in the Metro Detroit area.
