The Moth

What is The Moth?
The Moth is an acclaimed not-for-profit organization dedicated to the art and craft of storytelling. Since its launch in 1997, The Moth has presented thousands of stories, told live and without notes, to standing-room-only crowds worldwide.

Moth shows are renowned for the great range of human experience they showcase. Each show starts with a theme, and the storytellers explore it, often in unexpected ways. Since each story is true and every voice authentic, the shows dance between documentary and theater, creating a unique, intimate, and often enlightening experience for the audience. How do I tell a story?
When you arrive visit the table near the door and sign up to enter your name into the hat to tell a story. We’ll pick a name at random and the show will begin. Each teller will have five minutes to tell his or her tale. After each story, the judges comprised of teams from the audience confer, and give a score. The teller with the highest score becomes our StorySLAM winner. The winner will compete with the year’s other winners in the annual Detroit Moth GrandSLAM held each fall.

Do I have to tell a story?
We understand not everyone is a fan of taking stage, and we don’t force anyone to put their name in so feel free to come and just enjoy drinks, dinner, and night of entertainment with friends. Looking for a little encouragement to finally step up to the mic? A few of our classic cocktails should do the trick.

What types of stories can I tell?
Be Forewarned The Moth is for TRUE STORIES. OK, there won’t be a fact-checker there, but please know, emphatically, The Moth is not for fiction stories. The Moth is NOT a venue for readings; it is a venue for tellings. No notes, papers, or cheat sheets allowed. Contestants are judged on sticking to the five-minute time frame, sticking to the theme and having a story that sticks — one that has a conflict and a resolution.

Do you have any story tips?
No standup routines please: The Moth LOVES funny people but requires that all funny people tell funny STORIES. Steer clear of meandering endings: your last line should be clear in your head. Start in the action and set up the stakes.

Is there a cover charge or can I buy tickets in advance?
Both options are now available. There is a cover charge at the door the day of the event for $5. Please click here to purchase pre-sale tickets! Pre-sold tickets guarantee admittance and cost $10. We’ve made these pre-sale tickets available for individuals who need to arrive closer to the start of the show or perhaps buy a block of tickets for a group in advance. Due to limited seating, pre-sold tickets DO NOT guarantee a seat. Reservations are also not accepted on Moth nights.
